ASCO Codes and their meaning

This post is for all those who are interested in applying for migration to Australia. The post explains how the Australian standard Classification of Occupations work and how a prospective migrant can use the ASCO codes to determine his/her suitability for a particular trade.

Ok first of all what exactly is ASCO and ASCO codes?

To be able to apply for immigration to Australia, you need to have some sort of skills which are required in Australia. The list of all such skills which are in demand in Australia are listed on a Skilled Occupation List, SOL which can be accessed by visiting the URL

If you open the SOL, you will see that there are dozens of professions listed in the SOL. All the professions listed on the SOL are in demand in Australia. Against each profession there is an ASCO code assigned.

The ASCO code of the profession defines the profession and it is the definition of the ASCO which matters while determining the skills of a person. For example I was once contacted by a person who was a high school teacher of Biology. He wanted to apply for immigration by nominating the profession of Biologist. Now according to him he was a biologist but according to the ASCO classification he is a high school teacher and not a biologist.

Similarly in another incident, a pharmacist applied for immigration by nominating the profession of Pharmaceutical sales representative. The person was not aware that according to the ASCO classification, he is a pharmacist and not a Pharmaceutical sales representative.

Hence, it is of utmost importance that before you apply for immigration and nominate a profession, you should be 100% sure that you are nominating the correct profession. Other wise your application will be simply rejected on the basis that you do not have expertise in the nominated profession.

Now the question is how can a person check whether his expertise are in accordance with the classifications of the ASCO codes. While trying to figure out the answer, I finally found an online copy of the complete ASCO codes and the definition of each and every code.

The copy can be accessed at the following weblink

ASCO Codes

So if you are not sure whether your skills and work experience fall into a particular category then simply visit the URL above and check the classification.

Kind Regards

AOA,

Dear Junaid,

I am Assad Akhlaq from Saudi Arabia. I am a Pakistani national. I am doing MS in Electrical Engineering from King Saud University.I am interested in applying as a Skilled Migrant on the basis of my BSc (Electrical Engineeirng) degree. My age is 28, IELTS score is 6.5. I have more than 3 years of work experience but my experience letter doesn’t include my duties during my job. So I think it is of no use, but a consultant in Pakistan who assessed my case included the points for specific work experience too that I think are not valid as my duties are not mentioned on my experience certificate letter.
Can you please provide my your email address so that I can tell u my case in detail?.

Looking forward for your reply

@Ana

You can have either of them. Both of them are acceptable. General OR academic.

But since general one is more easy, you can give general version.

Its up to you.

Yes.

MODL is a list containing certain professions which are in high demand in Australia. The complete list of professions is SOL.

MODL can be accessed by visiting the following link

http://www.immi.gov.au/skilled/general-skilled-migration/skilled-occupations/occupations-in-demand.htm

SOL can be accessed by visiting the following link

http://www.immi.gov.au/allforms/pdf/1121i.pdf

ASCO codes are classifications of professions used by the immigration department to determine whether you do actually fit the criteria of a particular profession of which you claim to be an expert in or not.

The ASCO codes explain what a person should know or what skills set a person should have if he/she claims to have X number of experience in a particular field.

You can read the details of individual ASCO codes by visiting the following link

http://www.abs.gov.au/AUSSTATS/abs@.nsf/Previousproducts/1220.0Contents11997?opendocument&tabname=Summary&prodno=1220.0&issue=1997&num=&view=

If you are a .Net developer you should get your skills assessed under the following ASCO code

Computing Professional - .Net technologies 2231-79

And then apply for Offshore immigration visa subclass 175.

The first step would be to get at least 6 in all bands of the IELTS exam.

And then obtain a positive skills assessment from Either ACS or Engineering Council of Australia in a profession listed on the SOL.

Once you have done that, you can then lodge an application.
